Telling Our Stories - It All Began with an Ad
The first time I heard about Telecare was from an advertisement in The Abbotsford News promoting opportunity to support lonely and distressed people by telephone. I kept the newspaper open and reread the ad several times over the next couple of days. I warmed to the possibility of being involved in a ministry that helps others through listening, yet I felt ill equipped to do so. I questioned if I had what it took to do such work. Then there was my young family. My husband and I had four children-- from six years old to four months. I seldom went anywhere without them.
I was in a quandary but decided I would pray about it and call the number in the ad to find out more. The woman who returned my call understood. She encouraged me to attend the upcoming information evening to see if Telecare was a fit for me. Still unsure of committing, I attended the meeting. Together with others like me, I listened to the Telecare leaders talk about the need for caring men and women to engage compassionately hurting people who called.
By the end, I was sure of my future with Telecare, and soon began attending the weekly training sessions. Thursday evenings became my time out, and I reflected on what I learned throughout the week. Some thoughts that stayed with me were that I did not have to have all the answers, that I could not and should not try to “fix” the caller, and that being a caring listener has abundant value.
I am grateful that God led me to read the ad in The Abbotsford News years ago and for His encouragement to carry on. Anyone, including young moms, will find volunteering with Telecare rewarding and life changing.
