Telecare's New Grant Empowers Reach to Vulnerable Communities

Abbotsford's Telecare Crisis and Caring Line has been awarded a vital $5000 grant by the F. K. Morrow Foundation of Toronto. This significant grant will play a pivotal role in expanding Telecare's outreach to individuals facing loneliness, depression, suicidal thoughts, and family estrangement. The F. K. Morrow Foundation's mission aligns perfectly with Telecare's goals, aiming to catalyze lasting improvements in the quality of life for individuals and communities navigating economic, social, and environmental challenges.

Executive Director Bill Strom expressed gratitude for the grant, highlighting the profound impact it will have on their outreach efforts. "We are thankful for the grant," commented Strom. "It enables us to reach out to social service agencies across the lower mainland who serve people at risk and remind them we're here to help."

The grant's significance lies in its capacity to strengthen partnerships with social service agencies. Strom emphasized that collaborating with these agencies is crucial for identifying individuals who can benefit from Telecare's phone-in support. Given the diverse demographics of those at risk, general advertising can be challenging. However, individuals already receiving assistance from social agencies are more readily identifiable, and agencies can actively promote Telecare's phone-in support services among their constituents.

"We know individuals can search 'support lines near me' or consult bc.211.ca for excellent resources," Strom added. "Our hope is that endorsement by agencies will raise awareness of Telecare's services and all Crisis Lines of British Columbia at
  www.crisislines.bc.ca."

Telecare Crisis and Caring Line provides essential services, offering supportive listening care to those who need it most. Anyone seeking compassionate support can reach out to Telecare toll-free at 1-888-852-9099.

This grant marks a significant step forward for Telecare, strengthening their capacity to reach vulnerable communities and offer a lifeline to individuals in their times of need. It embodies the spirit of collaboration and community support, aligning Telecare's mission with the values of the F. K. Morrow Foundation.

When my husband passed away three years ago, I lost more than a partner—I lost my sense of purpose. My name is Margaret, and I’m 72 years old. I spent nearly 50 years married to the love of my life, building a home, raising children, and sharing every part of my day with him. When he was gone, the house we filled with laughter and memories became unbearably quiet.

One night, lying awake in the early hours, I came across Telecare’s number while scrolling through mental health resources. Something about the phrase “compassionate listening” gave me the courage to call. My hands shook as I dialled, but I thought, What do I have to lose?
