CRISIS AND CARING LINE HOSTS FREE EVENT IN SUPPORT OF WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Abbotsford, BC (Oct 1, 2021) – Telecare Crisis & Caring Line is hosting Caring Conversations--a virtual event focused on relationships, community and mental health.  To coincide with the World Health Organization’s “World Mental Health Day” on October 10th, the WHO encourages organizations to share the work they are doing to help overcome mental health issues.  Telecare, a faith-based ministry, operates a free call centre to anyone who calls regardless of race, creed, or social standing. The registered charity is based out of Abbotsford with volunteers available to listen to how callers are feeling, no matter their emotion. Telecare uses empathetic listening to encourage callers to express themselves and how they are feeling.

“We understand that people are still struggling during this pandemic. We’ve lost so much over the past nineteen months,” said Bill Strom, Executive Director at Telecare. “We hope this event opens doors to start new conversations about mental health and raise awareness about our call line that serves everyone as we navigate pandemic pain and loss.”

The virtual event will run from 7:00-8:15 pm on Thursday, October 28 and feature keynote speaker Daniel Whitehead, CEO of Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries - an international charity that equips the Church to support mental health and wellbeing.  In his talk, Daniel Whitehead will unpack a relational vision for humanity, while emphasising the importance of being seen, loved and valued as we are. Daniel will also explore the importance of creating space, and taking time, to let love take root and grow.

“I am both thrilled and honoured to be sharing at the Telecare annual fundraiser this year.” shared guest speaker Daniel, “As a ministry committed to practically living out Christ's call to love others well, I feel a strong resonance with their invaluable work.”

Telecare also welcomes musical guest Luke Vandevert from the musical collaboration The Arctic.  Luke recently won a Leo Award for his work on "Christmas at our House with Brian Doerksen and Friends." That night, Luke will release a new song written specifically for the event titled "Limbo."

Those interested in attending Caring Conversations can register online at https://www.telecarebc.com/caringconversations  While registration is free, a $25 donation is suggested.

When my husband passed away three years ago, I lost more than a partner—I lost my sense of purpose. My name is Margaret, and I’m 72 years old. I spent nearly 50 years married to the love of my life, building a home, raising children, and sharing every part of my day with him. When he was gone, the house we filled with laughter and memories became unbearably quiet.

One night, lying awake in the early hours, I came across Telecare’s number while scrolling through mental health resources. Something about the phrase “compassionate listening” gave me the courage to call. My hands shook as I dialled, but I thought, What do I have to lose?

Life is filled with moments of difficulty, pain, and uncertainty. In such times, finding words to express our emotions or to pray can feel impossible. The Psalms, however, offer a lifeline.
